Why Learn to Ride a Scooty?

A scooty is the easiest and cheapest way to get around a busy city on your own. It needs no clutch or gears, it’s light, it fits through traffic and it can be parked almost anywhere. For students, working women and anyone tired of waiting for rides, it means real independence.

Many of our students learn a scooty first and a car later – or learn both. The balance, road sense and traffic awareness you build on two wheels make learning a car easier too.

Our scooty students come from every walk of life: university students riding between hostel and campus, teachers and nurses doing a daily commute, mothers who want to handle the school run and bazaar trips themselves, and retired men and women who simply want to stay mobile. What they have in common is that they want a safe, structured way to learn rather than being handed the keys by a relative and told to “just go”. That is what a proper scooty driving course gives you – the right order of skills, a calm instructor and a training scooty you don’t have to worry about scratching.

Low running cost

Very little fuel for daily trips.

Beats traffic

Easier through city jams.

Easy parking

Park at college, office or bazaar.

No gears

Automatic – just throttle and brakes.

Independence

No waiting for a ride.

Quick to learn

Riding confidently in 10 days.

Know Your Scooty – The Controls Explained

Before your first ride, your instructor shows you every control with the engine off. Here’s what you’ll learn.

An automatic scooty is laid out so that everything you need is under your hands. Your right hand looks after speed and the stronger brake; your left hand looks after the gentler brake and signalling. Your feet do nothing while you ride – they rest on the floorboard – which is exactly why a scooty is easier to learn than a geared motorcycle.

Why we start with the engine off

Most first-ride accidents happen because a nervous beginner twists the throttle while reaching for a brake. Spending ten minutes with the engine off – squeezing each lever, finding the indicator with your thumb, feeling how far the throttle turns – means your hands already know what to do when the engine is running. It is the quickest way to calm first-lesson nerves.

Learn every control with a patient instructor.

How to Learn Scooty Driving Step by Step

This is the exact order our instructors follow. If you're wondering how you can learn scooty driving quickly and safely, don't skip steps – each one builds on the last.

  1. Wear a helmet and the right clothes

Always wear a helmet, fastened. Wear closed shoes and keep loose clothing – dupatta, chadar or long sleeves – tucked in and away from the wheels.

  2. Learn the controls with the engine off

Sit on the scooty, both feet on the ground, and practise squeezing both brake levers and finding the indicator and horn without looking.

  3. Walk the scooty and use the stand

Push the scooty beside you, then practise putting it on and off the side stand and centre stand. This builds a feel for its weight.

  4. Start the engine safely

Hold the rear brake, turn the key and press the self-start. Keep your hand off the throttle until you're ready to move.

  5. Balance and move off slowly

On a quiet, flat road, twist the throttle very gently, lift your feet once the scooty is moving and look ahead, not down. A little speed actually helps balance – but keep it slow.

  6. Brake smoothly to a stop

Ease off the throttle, squeeze the rear brake, then the front brake, and put your left foot down as you stop. Practise until it feels natural.

  7. Turn and make a U-turn

Slow down before the turn, look where you want to go and lean gently with the scooty. Practise wide turns first, then tighter U-turns.

  8. Practise on quiet roads

Ride around the block near your home: speed breakers, gentle slopes, parked cars and junctions, using indicators every time.

  9. Move into real traffic

With your instructor, ride on busier roads: keeping left, checking mirrors, keeping distance from cars and handling signals and roundabouts.

  10. Prepare for your licence test

Practise slow riding, tight turns and stopping in a set space – the control skills examiners look for – plus road signs for the sign test.

Most beginners reach step 8 in 3–4 lessons and are licence-test ready by the end of the 10-day course.

Can you learn scooty driving on your own?

Some people do teach themselves with a family member’s scooty, and the steps above are the same ones you would follow. The difference an instructor makes is in the small corrections: noticing that you are looking at the front wheel, that you are grabbing the front brake, or that you put your feet down too early. Those habits are hard to see in yourself and hard to undo later. A second person walking beside you on the first ride also stops the scooty from tipping if you lose balance, which takes most of the fear away.

If you do practise between lessons, keep to the quiet street you trained on, ride only in daylight and always with a helmet. Do not take a passenger and do not ride on main roads until your instructor has taken you there first.

For Women

How to Learn Scooty Driving for Ladies – With a Female Instructor

More and more women in Islamabad, Abbottabad and Mansehra ride a scooty to college, work and the bazaar. The biggest worries we hear are balance, what to wear and riding in traffic with men around. Our female instructors solve all three.

Ladies scooty training in Islamabad is one of our most-booked courses, and female instructors are also available at our Abbottabad and Mansehra branches. Many of our women students have never ridden a bicycle, and that is completely fine – the course starts from zero.

What to wear

Wear comfortable, closed shoes (no heels), and pin or tuck your dupatta, chadar or abaya so nothing can reach the wheel. This is the single most important safety tip for women riders.

Learning in comfort

Your female instructor starts with you on a quiet road near your home, at your pace. A family member is welcome to come along. See how our ladies driving course works, and what happens in a first lesson.

Riding confidently in traffic

We teach you to hold your position in the lane, ignore honking and keep distance, so you ride calmly rather than nervously.

How to Get a Scooty Driving Licence in Pakistan

In Pakistan, a scooty is licensed as a motorcycle. That means you need a motorcycle licence to ride one legally – a car licence does not cover it. If you want both, you can hold both categories.

If you live in Islamabad, your licence comes from the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP). If you live in Abbottabad or Mansehra, it comes from KP Police through the district licensing office. The process is similar in both: a learner permit first, a waiting period to practise, then a sign test and a riding test.

How to apply for a scooty driving licence – step by step

  1. Apply for a learner permit

Apply for a motorcycle learner permit at your nearest licensing office, or online where available, with your CNIC. (Islamabad: ITP. Abbottabad & Mansehra: KP Police.)

  2. Practise with your learner permit

The learner permit is usually valid for six months, and you can take the test after 42 days. Use this time to complete your 10-day scooty course.

  3. Take the sign / written test

A computer-based test on road signs and traffic rules.

  4. Take the riding test

Show that you can control the scooty: moving off, slow riding, turning and stopping safely.

  5. Get your licence

Once you pass, your permanent motorcycle licence is issued.

The riding test is where most first-time applicants lose marks. Examiners are not looking for speed; they are watching whether you can move off without wobbling, ride slowly in a straight line, turn without putting a foot down and stop within a marked space. That is why Day 9 of our course is spent on exactly these control skills.

Documents you usually need

Age

You must meet the minimum age set by ITP or KP Police for a motorcycle licence. Check the current rule with your licensing office before you apply.

Rules and fees change – always confirm with ITP or KP Police. We guide every scooty student through the process.

RIDE SAFE

Scooty Safety Rules Every New Rider Must Know

A scooty gives you no metal box around you, so good habits are your protection. These are the eight rules our instructors repeat until they become automatic.

01

Helmet, every ride

Fastened, every time. It's required by law and it saves lives.

02

Both brakes together

Rear first, then front. Never grab the front brake alone.

03

Loose clothing tucked in

Dupatta, chadar and scarves away from the wheels.

04

Keep left

Ride on the left side of your lane and let faster traffic pass.

05

Distance from trucks

Stay out of heavy vehicles' blind spots, especially on the KKH.

06

Slow in rain

Wet roads and painted lines are slippery. Brake early and gently.

07

No phone while riding

Stop safely before answering.

08

No pillion while learning

Carry a passenger only once you're fully confident.

6 Common Mistakes When Learning Scooty Driving

After teaching thousands of beginners, we see the same six mistakes again and again. Every one of them is easy to fix once you know about it.

Looking down at the front wheel

Fix: Look far ahead where you want to go.

Twisting the throttle too much

Fix: Tiny movements; the scooty responds quickly.

Grabbing the front brake

Fix: Squeeze rear first, then front, smoothly.

Putting feet down too early

Fix: Keep feet up until the scooty has almost stopped.

Forgetting the side stand

Fix: Check it's up before every ride.

Leaving the indicator on

Fix: Switch it off after every turn.

Scooty or Car – Which Should You Learn First?

It depends on how you travel. If most of your trips are short and you usually travel alone, a scooty is quicker to learn and far cheaper to run. If you regularly carry family or drive between cities, a car makes more sense.
