Why Learn to Drive an Automatic Car?

Automatic cars are quickly becoming common in Pakistan – the Toyota Passo, Vitz, Aqua, Honda Fit and many imported and newer family cars are automatic. With no clutch to control and no gears to change, you can put all your attention on the road: steering, speed, mirrors and other traffic.

Easier and faster to learn

Without the clutch, there’s no stalling and no juggling three pedals. Most beginners feel comfortable moving the car on their very first day and reach city traffic sooner than in a manual.

Less stress in traffic

In stop-go traffic on busy roads and markaz areas, an automatic simply creeps forward when you lift off the brake. No aching left leg, no rolling back at signals.

Ideal for nervous beginners and ladies

Fewer controls means less to think about, which is why many nervous learners and many of our lady students choose automatic. Learn with a certified female instructor if you prefer.

When manual is the better choice

If your family car is manual, or you’ll drive on steep hill roads often, a manual car driving course may suit you better. Both cost the same, and many students learn automatic first and add manual later with a short 7-day manual course.

How an Automatic Car Works – Pedals and Gear Selector Explained

An automatic looks simple, but a few rules make all the difference to driving it safely. Here's what you'll learn before you move.

Two pedals, one foot

BBrakeRight foot · wider pedal
AAcceleratorRight foot

No clutch – left foot rests flat on the floor

Use only your RIGHT foot for both pedals. Your left foot rests flat on the floor. Using two feet is the most common automatic beginner mistake – it leads to pressing both pedals at once.

The gear selector – P, R, N, D

PositionWhat it meansWhen to use it
P – ParkLocks the wheelsWhen parked, before switching the engine off
R – ReverseDrives backwardsReversing and parking – only when fully stopped
N – NeutralNo drive to the wheelsRarely – e.g. if the car is being pushed
D – DriveMoves forward, changes gears for youNormal driving
Low gear (B / L)Holds a lower gearLong downhill roads and steep climbs

Always keep your foot on the brake when you move the selector, and only change between D and R once the car has completely stopped.

Creep – the automatic’s secret

In D, an automatic moves forward slowly on its own when you lift your foot off the brake. This ‘creep’ is perfect for parking and slow traffic – you control it with gentle brake pressure, often without touching the accelerator.

Want to try this in a real Passo? Book your first class.

How to Drive an Automatic Car – Step by Step

This is the order our instructors teach it. Follow it every time until it becomes automatic.

  1. Adjust your seat and mirrors

Sit so your right foot reaches the brake fully with a slight bend in the knee. Set the inside and side mirrors before you start.

  2. Foot on the brake, start the engine

Press the brake firmly with your right foot, check the selector is in P, then start the engine.

  3. Select D

Keeping your foot on the brake, move the selector to D. Release the handbrake.

  4. Let the car creep

Slowly lift your foot off the brake. The car starts moving gently on its own.

  5. Accelerate smoothly

Move your right foot to the accelerator and press gently. The car changes gears for you as speed builds.

  6. Brake early and smoothly

Move your foot back to the brake well before you need to stop, and press progressively – no sudden stamps.

  7. Stopping at signals

Stay in D with your foot firmly on the brake. There's no need to change to N or P for a short stop.

  8. Reversing

Stop completely, keep your foot on the brake, select R, check all around, then ease off the brake and let the car creep backwards.

  9. Hills

On a climb, move quickly from brake to accelerator so the car doesn't roll back. On long descents, select the low gear (B/L) and brake gently.

  10. Parking and switching off

Stop, keep your foot on the brake, select P, apply the handbrake, then switch off the engine.

Most beginners are comfortable with steps 1–7 by their second or third class.

Learn it with a patient instructor beside you.

8 Common Automatic Driving Mistakes (and How We Fix Them)

Using the left foot for the brake

Fix: Right foot only; left foot rests on the floor.

Changing to R or P while moving

Fix: Always come to a full stop first.

Forgetting the car creeps

Fix: Keep your foot on the brake whenever you're stopped in D or R.

Coasting downhill in N

Fix: Stay in D or a low gear and brake gently.

Riding the brake

Fix: Brake firmly when needed, then lift your foot fully.

Stamping on the accelerator

Fix: Squeeze gently; automatics respond quickly.

Not using the handbrake when parked

Fix: P plus handbrake, every time.

Relying only on the brakes on long descents

Fix: Select the low gear (B/L) to save the brakes.

Our instructors spot these habits early and correct them in the car, before they stick.
