Quick answer: If you live outside Pakistan, you can renew your Islamabad driving license online on the official ITP portal. If you live in Islamabad, you book an online appointment and complete renewal at the ITP License Branch in Shakarparian. Either way, you need a medical fitness form (Form-B), your CNIC, and your old license.
Renewing a driving license sounds simple, but many people get confused about which route to follow, which documents to bring, and how much to pay. This guide explains everything in plain steps, using information from the official Islamabad Police and ITP websites and recent news reports.
Still confused? Get a free consultation. Makkah Driving School runs the “Get a License With Us” campaign. Call or WhatsApp 0315 8178003 and a dedicated agent will guide you through the whole process in a full one-to-one consultation session, free of cost.
Which Licenses Can You Renew Through ITP?
| Where your license was issued | Where to renew |
|---|---|
| Islamabad (ICT) | Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) |
| Punjab | Punjab DLIMS portal (dlims.punjab.gov.pk) |
| Other provinces | The licensing authority of that province |
Always renew with the authority that issued your license. Check the front of your card if you are not sure.
Two Ways to Renew an Islamabad License
Option 1: Online renewal (for overseas Pakistanis)
The official Islamabad Police website lists “Driving License Renewal” as a smart, biometric service through an overseas portal that uses Form-B. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirms that Islamabad-issued licenses can be renewed online through the ITP portal. This service was launched to help Pakistanis living abroad.
Option 2: In person at the ITP License Branch (for people in Islamabad)
ITP asks people to book an online appointment before visiting the License Branch in Shakarparian, Islamabad. Walk-in tokens may also be available, but appointment slots are limited each day, so book early.
Important: Many blogs say everyone can renew fully online. On the official ITP website, the online renewal service is described as the overseas portal. If you live in Islamabad, call the ITP DLIMS helpline on 051-9001541 or the ITP helpline 1915 to confirm the best route for you before you travel.
Documents You Need
For all applicants
- Original CNIC (or NICOP for overseas applicants)
- Your old or recently expired driving license
- Medical fitness certificate (ITP Form-B)
- Recent passport-size photos
- Proof of fee payment
About the medical form (Form-B):
- Medical facilities are available at the ITP office.
- If you get your medical done at a government hospital, bring Form-B attested by a medical officer, with the RMP number and other details.
- A medical certificate is required under Section 12(2) of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1965.
- ITP charges a Rs200 medical fee when the medical is done at their office.
Extra for overseas applicants:
- A thumb impression upload, or a NADRA verification slip with fingerprints
- Fee paid into the Federal Treasury Account, with the receipt sent to the ITP Online Renewal Desk
- If your license has been expired for more than 3 years, a valid driving license from your country of residence as proof of driving skill
- An authority letter if someone else will collect the license for you
Step-by-Step: How to Renew
If you live in Islamabad
- Get your medical done. Download Form-B from the ITP website and get it signed, or do the medical at the ITP office.
- Book an online appointment on the Islamabad Police website (Services > Book Online Appointment) for the ITP License Branch.
- Gather your documents: original CNIC, copies, old license, photos, Form-B.
- Visit the License Branch in Shakarparian on your appointment day.
- Complete biometric verification and get your photo taken.
- Pay the renewal fee. You will get a slip showing when to collect your license.
- Collect your renewed license on the date given.
If you live abroad
- Go to the official ITP DLIMS portal (dlims.islamabadpolice.gov.pk) through the Islamabad Police website.
- Open the overseas renewal service and fill in your details exactly as they appear on your license and CNIC/NICOP.
- Upload your medical fitness certificate and other documents.
- Add your thumb impression or NADRA verification slip.
- Pay the fee into the Federal Treasury Account and send the receipt to the ITP Online Renewal Desk.
- Wait for processing. The ITP renewal SOP says licenses are delivered within 15 days if all requirements are met.
Renewal Fees
The Islamabad administration revised driving license fees in May 2024. The fees below are from that notification as reported by Dawn. In 2026, the Auditor General’s report asked the administration to review these fees, so they may change. Always confirm the exact amount at the counter or on the portal.
| When you renew | Fee |
|---|---|
| Within 30 days after expiry | Rs 2,000 |
| After 30 days, within 1 year | Rs 2,500* |
| After 1 year, within 3 years | Rs 3,000 |
| After 3 years | Rs 8,000, plus theory and driving tests |
| Duplicate license | Rs 3,000 |
| Digital driving license card | Rs 2,000 |
*One news report listed Rs 3,500 for this period. Confirm at the counter.
Other ITP service charges reported in 2024: Rs 200 medical fee, Rs 200 road test fee for cars, and an optional urgent or fast-track fee of Rs 2,000.
What If My License Has Expired?
- Within 30 days: Lowest renewal fee.
- 30 days to 1 year, and 1 to 3 years: A higher fee applies.
- More than 3 years: The fee is Rs 8,000 and you must appear for the theory test and the driving test under Section 12(4) of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance, 1965.
If your license expired more than 3 years ago, practice before the test. Many people lose confidence after years away from driving, and a few refresher lessons can save you a failed attempt and a second visit. A short 7-day course is enough for learners who already have some experience, while the 12-day course suits people who need more practice. You can also choose an automatic car course if you prefer no clutch.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Name or CNIC mismatch. Even small spelling differences can delay your application.
- Skipping the medical form. Form-B is needed. Without it, your application will not move forward.
- Using the wrong portal. Punjab licenses cannot be renewed on the ITP site.
- Trusting old fee lists. Fees were raised sharply in 2024. Articles from before that are out of date.
- Entering your CNIC on unofficial sites. Use only islamabadpolice.gov.pk and dlims.islamabadpolice.gov.pk.
- Waiting too long. The longer your license stays expired, the higher the fee and the more steps you face.
